(More customer reviews)I have a couple of units on my TV that have Internet capability but they are a long way from my router. I bought one Cmple - Ethernet Cable CAT6 - 100 FT / 30.48 M, Blue (here on Amazon) and ran it to my router (faster, more reliable, and cheaper than a wireless box). It worked well plugged into either device but was difficult to move from device to device as the plugs are on the back and the devices are in a cabinet. I thought this device might be the solution to my problem. It could have been but didn't work out for my situation.
I have a DISH satellite receiver and a Sony Blu-Ray player, both with Internet capability. I only need to use one at a time so I thought this plug would be an inexpensive solution so I ordered it.
It arrived by mail and I hooked it up. Without going into my troubleshooting effort here are the results. Look at the picture of the device to reference the different plugs. The plug on the back goes to the long CAT6 cable and the left/right plugs are for the two devices. Inspecting the item I found the back connector and the right connector had stiff springy wires like to find on most such cables. However, the wires on the left connector are less springy and can be easily bent. They seem to be used to actually connect the back connector electrically to the right connector, so when you plug into this connector you are pressing on the interconnect wires. On my unit these wires were not tight enough and bent to the sides slightly and nothing worked after that. I used a small screwdriver to try and straighten the wires but was unsuccessful.
Almost the same time as the coupler arrived I received a nice email from the folks who sent it to me asking for my evaluation. I reported my findings and they immediately sent another unit, I didn't even have to ask or return the first one. Great service. The new unit arrived a few days later. It is built the same but the left plug wires were stretched a bit tighter. The first time I plugged into it one wire moved slight to the right. I straighted it with my small screwdriver and had no further problems.
With all three cables attached and the Sony player turned off the DISH network worked fine. However, even when you place the DISH box in standby it still seems to be active on the network so I was unable to use the Sony player with the DISH receiver plugged in. Unplugging the DISH cable allowed the Sony to work fine. So, to use the product I could turn off the Sony device which was fine but I could not use the Sony without unplugging the DISH cable. I used it this way for a couple of weeks but eventually replaced it with an active network switch from Netgear.
The results are: If you have two devices to share the cable and they can both be turned off when not needed then this coupler will likely work fine. If one can be turned off and the other easily unplugged when not in use (like a netbook for example) then it will work fine. The device is also quite usable using only two of the connections to extend the length a CAT5 or CAT6 cable connection with a second cable (it is cheaper than some couplers with only two connections). It might also be useful if you had a need to monitor the cable activity with a tester that could be plugged into the third connector. The company was very responsive. I will keep it for possible future use.
